Turquoise Dolphin Intro

Recently, we at SHIFT heard about something called the Blue Whale Challenge. The Blue Whale Challenge is an incredibly dangerous, scary trend happening around the world, and it’s important that we let teens know to stay far away from it.

When/if a teen downloads an app for the Blue Whale Challenge, the challenge snags as much personal information it can get, including things like phone numbers and physical addresses. It then requires teens to do a certain number of tasks, like listening to specific songs, or worse, physically harm themselves. It culminates in a threat to blackmail the teen if they don’t commit suicide. It’s estimated by many sources that nearly 200 teens have committed suicide since the challenge got it’s start overseas, and now it has leached into the United States, as well.

Obviously, we want to make sure teens stay far away from the Blue Whale Challenge. It’s a horrifying game, and searching for it on social media can be dangerous, and very triggering to those who self-harm or have suicidal tendencies.

To combat this challenge, SHIFT has launched the Turquoise Dolphin Challenge. In the wild, dolphins are animals known to lift each other up. In fact, if a dolphin in a pod becomes injured, other dolphins will lift the injured dolphin to the surface of the water to allow it to breathe.

For this challenge, we want to encourage teens to lift each other up and be there for those who need brought to the surface for a breath, metaphorically speaking, and to lift themselves up so they have the strength to lift others, also. Teens can participate in the challenge just by reaching out to someone that they think may need it. It’s as simple as inviting someone to sit with them at the pool, speaking kind words to others, and taking an active stance against all types of bullying.

If teens would like to dive deeper, we have come up with challenges teens can do to be a part of the Turquoise Dolphin Challenge. Below, you’ll find graphics that will allow teens to participate and share the project on social media. Feel free to download these and share with the hashtag #TurquoiseDolphin.
